woven, stretched, primed.
The canvas has served as the basis of painting for centuries and is probably one of the most traditional media of artistic expression.
In the upcoming exhibition on canvas, 14 different artists from the gallery will show how this medium can be dealt with. The works alternate between the continuation of tradition and the conscious break with it.
On the one hand, the paintings on display show in a variety of ways that the canvas as a painting surface for contemporary positions is far from being obsolete. Strictly geometric positions can still be negotiated here, mythical narratives can be drawn up, quiet rooms can be viewed and visual irritation can be generated.
On the other hand, the tradition is deliberately broken open. The canvas emancipates itself from its passive and invisible role as a painting surface in order to take on an active creative element of the work.
