Mikael Fagerlund

While Mikael Fagerlund’s works distinguish themselves by their severity and reduction, their hidden complexity is often not explicitly recognizable at first glance. His works oscillate between painting and sculpture, veering between two- and three-dimensionality and the traditions of Suprematism as well as Concrete and Minimal Art.

Fagerlund does not make use of the usual canvas stretcher as the basis for his paintings but rather geometrical blocks made of transparent acrylic glass. The vertical and

horizontal depressions or circular elements he etches into them are then highlighted with vinyl paint. Looking at the works frontally, it is nearly impossible for viewers to

immediately comprehend the different layers. Only by moving about in front of the work can one examine and gradually come to understand through one’s emotions.
