Carolin Jörg

Carolin Jörg evolves her works out of the medium of drawing. On paper, she creates sketches, notes, and designs for installations, which find their way to large form either as collages of many individual works or in motifs that fill an entire wall. The artist records her impressions of her surroundings in a kind of visual diary, using lead and colored pencils, ball-point pens, watercolors, and ink but also stamps on assembled papers. The artist uses every paper she can get her hands on as support: paper bags, blotter paper, bills, and scrap paper.

By causing these diary entries to collide with one another in a kind of “multipicture,” Carolin Jörg produces a contemporary, urban polylingualism that takes on a new quality thanks to the artist’s subjective perspective: snatched up and quickly tossed away again, part of the living world and a subjective biography.

Carolin Jörg also draws on such snapshots for the motifs of her large-format embroideries. They are suggestions of architecture and figures that fill entire walls with a seemingly light hand. And yet these works are preceded by a long process of creation. Figures and architecture are created based on small drawings and then projected onto the wall. The artist traces their outlines in needles and then spans black thread between them. In the end, these wall embroideries float several centimeters above the wall—an image that derives from life and yet has the legerity of a dream image.
