HUNTING BEARS – Dave Bopp
Duration of the exhibition: 19.09.2019 – 14.11.2020
Dave Bopp’s deeper interest in what is outside the perceptual spectrum is first shown in terms of shape and color. The striking painting techniques and the luminosity of the color surfaces, which indicate something that seems to be happening beyond our visible world, are indicative of this. Bopp’s large-format works on aluminum composite panels, for example, the two exhibited works Canyon (2020) and Plunge (2020), illustrate how the individual structures come together and take up the entire image carrier. Up close, however, the shapes literally stand out from one another, so that one can guess at the artist’s approach. What could be perceived as a smooth surface from a distance reveals itself as an almost relief-like color topography when approached.
Shapes generated on the computer are transferred to foils, which are then cut. The artist uses these stencils to process the image carrier so that the different surfaces and layers of paint remain clearly recognizable. These overlays make for an almost tactile experience that can only be understood by slowly groping your eyes.
