Opening: September the 25th, 2021
Duration of the exhibition: 25.09. – 06.11.2021
Under the title “Vienna Connection” we will be presenting Vienna-based Iranian artist Mona Radziabari and Viennese artist Thomas Gänszler from September 25th.
Regardless of the concept of each project, what Radziabari’s work has in common is that the artist has been working on the idea of recycling materials in each project since 2009. In the first phase, she recycled different boxes (shoebox, cigarette boxes, tea boxes …) while using the character of these handmade boxes to give the photos a surreal effect. In another project during the same period, she used the newspapers as the basis for her pictures, believing that the newspapers that do not publish the real news are not worth reading, so she recycled them and used them as the base material for painting.
The starting point of Thomas Gänszler’s “Continent” work cycle is a virtual topography created on the basis of random parameters. The exhibition series covers several thematic areas: From the digital act of creation, through exploration, to changing the digital terrain. Central themes such as the interaction between the digital and real-world, historical and art-historical references, and their sociological aesthetic consequences are opposed to fundamental questions of artistic production. The “bringing into the world” of form as a motif for artistic action is dealt with by creating a digital space or a parallel world.
The individual exhibitions take on different shapes depending on the sub-area of the cycle and adapt forms of presentation to different areas.
The works shown in the Michael Sturm gallery are dedicated to the aspect of creation/production and mark the beginning of the continent’s work cycle.
