Russell Maltz – Becoming Painted/Stacked

If someone is “tarred and feathered”, the consequences, not just proverbial, are drastic. When roof battens, bricks, plywood sheets, or paper are “painted and stacked” under the hand of Russell Maltz, it is far less drastic but no less consistent. The New York artist has been pursuing this artistic strategy since the 1970s with a consistency that can still be attributed to an astonishing power and diversity. Above all, it is an expression of an inner attitude.

Galerie Michael Sturm has represented the artist Russell Maltz for 20 years now. The show “Becoming Painted / Stacked”, which will open in our rooms on May 24th, is a very special anniversary exhibition – in two respects: It reminds of the founding years of the gallery and at the same time of the laying of the foundation stone for that artistic approach, who has shaped the work of Russell Maltz for 40 years now. Drawings and paintings, wall and floor works are shown. In any case, it is painting, that much is clear. But the carriers of this painting and their stacking cannot always be clearly identified.
