Andrea Bender, born in Schotten, knew since high school that she wanted to become an artist. After her graduation in 1993 she startet studying  free painting at the „Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste/Städelschule“ in Frankfurt Main as a student of well-known artist Jörg Immendorff. After changing university and into the class of Alf Schuler at the „Kunsthochschule Kassel“, Andrea Bender decided to apply for the „Kunstakademie“ in Dusseldorf in 1996. Aside from Jörg Immendorff, Dieter Krieg is one of her teachers. Krieg, one of the main representatives of the „New Figuration“, makes highly gifted Bender his master student in 1998. in 1999 the young artist graduates, receiving her academy letter of the „Kunstakademie“ Dusseldorf.

The new century starts with Bender making herself a name with her art. Several scholarships, for example, a travel scholarship to Venice by the Dusseldorf „Kunstverein“, a studio funding in 2000, and the scholarship „Herrenhaus Edenkoben“ in 2001 accompany the first years of her career, with leading her to Vienna in 2004/05 for a scholarship of the „Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD).

Her expressive paintings and graphics are mostly figurative. Pompous architecture with cryptical and disturbing elements together with individual figures, seemingly arisen from a bizarre fairytale, exude wit and sharp irony. Bender’s pictorially moved brushstrokes and her subtle handling with the coloring gives her artworks their own language.

Numerous national and international exhibitions, like in New York and Amsterdam (both in 2010) made her artwork known to a wider audience.  In 2005 Andrea Bender received the art prize of the „Röher Parkklinik“, as well as 2008 the „Dormagen-Guffanti“ scholarship in Cologne. The artist lives and works in Dusseldorf and Duisburg.
